Beware of phone scams this tax–filing season, IRS warns

IRS has compiled a list of top scams – including phone scams – for taxpayers to look out for during the 2015 tax–filing season that credit unions may want to share with their members.

IRS is working to raise consumer awareness on tax scams, so it's pushing out its "Dirty Dozen" list of scams for the 2015 filing season over the next 12 business days. It says phone scams top the list and continue to be a serious threat.

The IRS statement noted that is has seen a surge of phone scams in recent months where criminals impersonate an IRS agent and threaten arrest and license revocation, among other things. "If someone calls unexpectedly claiming to be from the IRS with aggressive threats if you don't pay immediately, it's a scam artist calling," said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen in the statement. "The first IRS contact with taxpayers is usually through the mail. Taxpayers have rights, and this is not how we do business."

The IRS sends out its "Dirty Dozen" list annually, which highlights various common scams taxpayers may encounter throughout the year and especially during tax-filing season. The agency topped its list with phone scams this year because it says they "have been a persistent and pervasive problem for many taxpayers for many months."

The treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration has received reports of about 290,000 contacts since October 2013 and has become aware of nearly 3,000 victims who have collectively paid more than $14 million as a result of phone scams, the IRS noted in its statement.

The IRS reminds taxpayers that it will never call to demand immediate payment, demand to be paid with no time left to ask questions or appeal, require a specific payment method or ask for credit or debit card information over the phone.

Member warning:

The National Credit Union Administration is warning consumers to beware of a new telephone fraud, known as a “vishing” scheme, that is using the agency’s name in an attempt to obtain personal financial information.

Several credit union members have been contacted by automated phone calls claiming to be from NCUA and notifying consumers their debit cards have been compromised. The call then asks the receiver to follow prompts, which request personal information, including sensitive financial data and personal identification information.

Anyone contacted by this so-called “vishing” scheme should immediately contact NCUA’s Consumer Assistance Center Hotline at 800-755-1030 or by email at to report the scam. Operators answer calls Monday-Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern.

NCUA neither seeks personal information from consumers over the telephone nor handles day-to-day maintenance of member account information. NCUA works with law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, to protect from consumers from frauds of this nature.

NCUA urges consumers to never verify or release financial information to unknown callers.

Checking Accounts with Dividends

Members that maintain an average daily balance of $500 or more will earn 0.15% interest on checking accounts, effective November 1st, 2014. Dividends will be paid the last business day of the month. We are also providing identity theft protection on all checking accounts at no additional cost to the member; however we are asking members to maintain an average daily balance of $25. If your average daily balance falls below $25, you will be charged a one-time $5 fee for that month.

Taking your debit card on vacation?

To prevent your debit card from being temporarily blocked for suspicious activity during times of travel; please notify the credit union when you are planning extensive travel with the dates and location of your destination. This will lessen any inconvenience of your card being blocked for suspicious activity during your travel. Please contact the credit union as soon as your travel plans are confirmed.

Courtesy Pay is Here

Triad Partners Federal Credit Union has introduced a new checking feature called Courtesy Pay. With Courtesy Pay, our intent is to provide you with another resource to help manage your occasional cash shortfall.

Courtesy Pay is a non-contractual courtesy, whereby we may honor your insufficient transactions up to your limit of $600, as long as you continue to maintain your checking account in good standing, which includes at least:

  1. continuing to make deposits consistent with your past practices;
  2. you are not in default on any loan obligation to Triad Partners Federal Credit Union;
  3. you bring your account to a positive balance at least once every 30 days.

Courtesy Pay does not guarantee that Triad Partners Federal Credit Union will pay your insufficient item. However, if we do pay your overdraft, your account will be charged our standard $28 non-sufficient funds (NSF) fee.

If you would like overdraft coverage for your ATM withdrawals and everyday debit card purchases, then simply ask us to add this coverage to your account.

Eight Tips to Fight Fraud

  1. Immediately report lost or stolen cards to your credit union
  2. Cover the ATM PIN pad when entering your number
  3. Choose a credit and debit card PIN number that is difficult to guess, but easy for you to remember
  4. Do not reply to any email, text or phone requests for your social security number, credit or debit account number or any other personal information
  5. Monitor your credit report, credit and debit card accounts and statements for unauthorized transactions
  6. Shred all credit and debit card statements or financial documents before you throw them away
  7. Before making purchases online with your credit or debit card, make sure the website is secure and the company is reputable
  8. Update anti-virus and spyware software regularly

We have a new system so you will need to follow these steps to set-up your account for the first time only

  1. Call the credit union @ 272-5244 so we may maintain your profile
  2. Call 272-4836 and enter the following:
    • The auto attendant will ask you to enter your account number. — Enter your member number and then the # key
    • Next, enter your personal identification code — Enter 9999# (this is a temporary code).
    • Enter the 2 digit transaction code — Enter 95# (this is to set your PIN)
    • Next, enter your personal identification code — Enter a 4 digit number followed by the # key.
    • You will be asked to enter this one more time — 4 digit number followed by the # key.
    • Next it will ask you to enter the 2 digit transaction code — we have new transaction codes and they are listed below. For your convenience, we have wallet size PAL cards that list all of our transaction codes and record numbers. Please ask for one on your next visit to the credit union.

Sign up for E-Statements Now — It's Free and Easy

First, you must be an online banking user. Please come by the Credit Union and indicate the accounts you would like to make online transfers to/from. Once you have activated your online banking account, you may sign up for E-statements from the convenience of your own home. It's the safest and most convenient delivery method! You will need to provide your email address where you wish to receive the statement. You will receive an email notifying you that your monthly/quarterly statement is available for retrieval online. You'll also be able to review the past 18 months of transaction history. It's that simple! And On-Line banking and E-Statements are both totally FREE! Simplify your finances and eliminate some paper too.
